Asbestos exposure poses serious health risks, primarily affecting the lungs. When asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are disturbed, tiny fibres are released into the air. If inhaled, these fibres can become lodged in the lungs, leading to severe diseases that often take decades to develop.
Asbestosis - A chronic lung disease causing scarring of lung tissue, leading to breathing difficulties.
Lung Cancer - Long-term exposure significantly increases the risk of lung cancer.
Mesothelioma - An aggressive cancer affecting the lining of the lungs or abdomen.
Pleural Thickening - Scarring of the lung lining, reducing lung function and causing pain.
Pigeon droppings can pose significant health risks, particularly in areas with heavy accumulation. The droppings can harbour harmful fungi, bacteria and parasites, leading to various diseases, especially if airborne particles are inhaled.
Histoplasmosis - A lung infection caused by a fungus growing in bird droppings, particularly dangerous for those with weakened immune systems.
Cryptococcosis - fungal disease affecting the lungs and nervous system, potentially fatal in immunocompromised individuals.
Psittacosis - A bacterial infection that can cause flu-like symptoms and pneumonia.
Salmonella and E. coli - Bacteria from droppings can contaminate surfaces and food, leading to severe gastrointestinal illness.
Black mold is a toxic mold that thrives in damp, humid environments. Exposure to its spores can cause respiratory issues and other health problems, particularly in vulnerable individuals.
Respiratory issues - The spores can trigger coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath, especially in those with asthma or allergies.
Skin and eye irritation - Contact with mold spores may cause rashes, redness or itching.
Headaches and fatigue - Prolonged exposure has been linked to neurological symptoms like brain fog and dizziness.
Weakened immune system - People with compromised immune systems may be more susceptible to infections from mold exposure.
